Fashion’s Night Out Sept. 10 at Fred Segal Center felt like a festive block party where the whole neighborhood came to have a ball. Musicians played on the sidewalks outside the celebrated boutique compound on Melrose Avenue. Fashion designers showed off their latest creations. More than 1,000 revelers joked and gossiped over free drinks at the nighttime event, which ran from 7PM to 11PM, according to Karen Meena, vice president of buying and merchandising at Fred Segal boutique Ron Robinson. And yes, it seemed like cash registers were ringing.

For fashion and retail blogger Tasha Nita Adams, the big crowds were more than a confirmation of green shoots sprouting in this economy. “It shows there is a fashion community in Los Angeles. It shows people want a center for fashion in Los Angeles,” said Adams, the creator and the writer for blog Blackburnandsweetzer.com. The blog covers the Melrose Heights neighborhood, where Fred Segal Center makes its address.

The scheduled events featured the following: a Nike customizing booth and a trunk show for Velvet Angels footwear at Fred Segal Feet, an appearance by Paige Premium Denim founder Paige Adams-Geller, Rory Beca debuting her Fall 2009 Willy Wonka-themed collection, Maison Martin Margiela exhibiting its one-of-a-kind items such as a gown constructed out of classic records. Whitley Kros designers Marisa Ribisi and Sophia Coloma showing off their most recent collection. The J. Brand Gallery debuted. There also was recently launched men’s line Freedman displaying its custom shop at Ron Robinson. But what really made this night out one to remember was this: a big street parade of stylish Angelenos partying and celebrating the world of fashion.
