L.A. Fashion Week Spring 2010: Eduardo Lucero

Most messages these days are sent on e-mail, but veteran Los Angeles–designer Eduardo Lucero sent some powerful messages through his Spring 2010 collection. He presented a sampling of his latest collection at Downtown L.A. Fashion Week Oct. 14 at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.

The collection’s first message protested surging violence in Mexico, where the full collection debuted Oct. 23 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Mexico in Mexico City. The primary color of the collection was black to symbolize mourning widows.

Yet there was a certain joie de vivre and humor brimming with the somber colors. One dress featured a giant boat neck collar. Another was a ballerina dress. A hood on one dress took inspiration from a nun’s wimple.

Another Lucero message was designers did not have to spend a fortune to make something beautiful. Accessories and details used in the collection often came from plastic jewelry. No fabric used in the collection cost more than $5 per yard. “The polyester doesn’t look or feel like polyester,” he said of some of his materials used.—Andrew Asch
