Anniversary Time
Founded as a blank-tee provider for other manufacturers, Los Angeles–based American Apparel opened its first store, in Montreal, on Oct. 13, 2003. The next store debuted in Los Angeles on Oct. 19 in Echo Park. A few weeks later, another emporium was launched in New York. Now celebrating its sixth anniversary as a retailer, American Apparel—a vertical operation that makes apparel for men, women and children—now has 275 stores in 20 countries. Dov Charney, the company’s chief executive, praised his 9,000 workers for their hard work and contributions. “We’ve had a challenging year, but we’ve accomplished a lot in a short time,” he said.
