New Eatery Opens in Cooper Building
Market, the new breakfast and lunch spot by restaurateur and Patina alum Bret Thompson, opened Oct. 15 on the Cooper Design Space’s ground floor. Thompson, who made a name for himself among Angeleno foodies with the 2007 debut of Milk, his cafeacute;/bakery on Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles, collaborated on Market with brother-in-law Pablo Martinez.
The pair aren’t new to the Fashion District. Lucy Thompson, Martinez’s sister and Bret Thompson’s wife, owns Siblings, a showroom in the Cooper building. “I’ve been watching the Garment District for a long time,” Thompson said. When the space, formerly occupied by Emerson’s, opened up late this summer, he and Martinez jumped at the opportunity, he said.
Market, which takes its inspiration from the casually abundant neighborhood markets found in small towns all over Europe, will serve soups, salads and sandwiches made from high-quality ingredients. The ambiance also has a vintage European flair, with a huge antique clock-tower clock face dominating one wall and a mirrored French window dominating another. Menu boards are made from reclaimed barn wood, and weathered market crates display goodies from the kitchen. Two oversized tables will serve as communal seating.
Mona Sangkala, the Cooper Design Space’s leasing director, said the addition of Market complements the building. “Market tops off the building perfectly and matches the feeling here—from the community atmosphere to the great showrooms,” she said.—Erin Barajas
