It’s LA Fashion Week. The event always inspires the need to showcase the design talent based here. You have probably noticed the stunning photo shoot in this week’s issue of Apparel News. It was truly a collaboration among artists to create a modern yet timeless take on the season’s hottest looks.
As Fashion Editor, my vision for the shoot was to capture the drama happening on the Spring runways here in LA and around the world. And what better place than in Hollywood – where drama is first and foremost part of the fabric of the city? After all, fashion and entertainment have been a hot topic as of late. And in LA, many designers create one-of-a-kind and custom looks for musicians performing on stage or actresses walking the red carpet.
This shoot draws inspiration from current music sensation Lady Gaga and the upcoming “Alice in Wonderland” feature film with Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp. Think current fashion trends with a slant toward all things feminine and frivolous- ruffles, sequins, lace, leggings, lingerie as outerwear, bodysuits and masks. For this shoot I chose designers who best captured the look including Jared Gold, David Alexander, Costume Dept., Skingraft, Zachariah Bryant, Dona Daneshi, Rami Kashou and Coco de Mer.
Shooting on location at the Heritage Square Museum in Los Angeles brought the vision to life. The Victorian era setting includes many historic homes formerly located in and around Los Angeles. Several structures are perfectly preserved and others are dilapidated, but are nonetheless beautiful. Photographer Richard Knapp and I chose to shoot in the areas that were most dilapidated – a symbolic gesture to the crumbling economy and precarious state of couture. But fashion is fantasy and finding a sense of escapism can be the perfect remedy to reality at any time.
