New Union Formed
The ongoing dispute between two factions of the garment- and restaurant-workers union UNITE HERE has led one group to form a new union. About 150,000 UNITE HERE members have left to form a group they’re calling Workers United, with plans to affiliate with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Workers United includes both apparel and textile workers, as well as hotel and restaurant workers. UNITE HERE formed in 2004 when the union formerly known as the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees merged with the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union, which included hotel, laundry, restaurant and casino workers.
