New Resources Guide: Road Kill

Accessories line Road Kill was created by designers Christopher Brunner and Whitney Pierce for their company, The Reycled Dead. The pair created the collection of jewelry and accessories made from dead animals out of their love for taxidermy, nature, fine art and road trips.

Animal lovers shouldn’t despair, though—no animals are killed for the express purpose of making the product. The collection is mostly made from creatures that have either died from natural causes or in unfortunate accidents—hence, the name Road Kill. Recently, the design duo have begun sourcing from veterinarians and furriers, and many animals are found on Native American reservations. The collection has an almost Native American feeling because it uses every piece of the animal. “They’re doing the same things that we’re trying to do, which is preserving life and nature,” Brunner said.

Bones, teeth, feathers and claws are transformed into jewelry and accessories for those who have an affinity for the macabre. Popular styles include “Man,” a racoon mandible dipped in gold or silver, and “Coy,” a chain necklace with a silver-dipped coyote fang and mallard feathers. The line is sold at stores such as Slow in Los Angeles; Goodbye Folk in Mexico City; Tiger Tree in Columbus, Ohio; and Oak in Brooklyn and Manhattan. —N. Jayne Seward
