New Resources Guide: Absolute Design

Former Los Angeles–area buyer Marla Hirschfeld, who now lives in Arizona, has launched a line of headwear with a cause.

Ten percent of proceeds from the line, called Absolute Design by Marla Hirschfeld, are donated to cancer organizations. In addition, Hirschfeld regularly donates the caps to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at several Arizona hospitals.

The hats are trendy and come in baseball and military styles. They are handmade, and some are embellished with Swarovski crystals. Wholesale prices range from $28 to $50. The line is sold at better boutiques.

“I always wanted to give back. Women need hats when they are undergoing chemotherapy, so this was a no-brainer,” said Hirschfeld, whose great-uncle was the noted New York Times illustrator Al Hirschfeld, known for his satirical portraits of Broadway actors and other entertainers.

Marla Hirschfeld launched the line in October.

“I started to do them as a hobby. I would bring them to several horse shows, where they would sell out. I then tried them at the January L.A. market and got a good response and have since gotten many reorders. I’ve never been in design but have always had an artistic flair. Maybe it’s from my uncle,” she said.—Robert McAllister
