Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '09: Laeken
Designer Mallyce Miller said she was inspired by today’s youth and the power to speak out and be heard when creating her Fall ’09 Laeken collection, shown March 14 at BOXeight Fashion Week.
“Bringing Obama into power is like speaking for the younger generation and our hopes and dreams and what he stands for essentially,” she said. “It’s like our generation finally having a voice.”
The designer, who was recently honored during the Gen Art “Fresh Faces in Fashion” show in October, correlated the theme back to the rebellious look of the ’90s grunge era and the British rock scene. The look was eclectic, with batik prints, bold plaids, fringe necklaces and Doc Martens. It was a fresh mix of fabrications and colors that reflected Miller’s world travels and her love of individualistic Japanese style. The collection included mix-and-match separates geared toward wearability during the day or night. Styles included zip-front skirts, high-waist jumpers, skinny pants and knit dresses. —N. Jayne Seward
