Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '09: Gen Art
On March 13, Gen Art and BOXeight Fashion Week partnered to present the multi-line “L.A. Fall Fashion” show at the Los Angeles Theatre. The show—which featured Fall 2009 designs from Grai, Society for Rational Dress and Raquel Allegra—was easily one of the biggest events of the Los Angeles Fashion Week calendar.
Grai, designed by Rick Owens proteacute;geacute; Maya Yogev, kicked off the show with a collection of knits and leather pieces in a somber monochromatic palette of black, gray and cream. Skirts were long, fluid and cut on the bias with hems that dragged on the floor and looked luxuriously chewed and unraveled. Jackets for men and women were made from washed or metallic leather. Yogev mixed knit panels into her leather pieces and played with proportion—cinching waists, elongating arms and creating oversized collars. Vaguely Japanese-inspired shapes gave the collection a “crouching tiger, hidden Goth kid” vibe.
Society for Rational Dress designer Corinne Grassini continued to play with the balance between masculine leather and chains and ephemeral chiffon and feminine knits. An expanded leather collection for Fall included a modern leather miniskirt, a sleek bomber jacket and a barely there vest. Chains—always a staple of the line—were represented in a big way. Fashioned into vests, collars and capes reminiscent of chainmail, chains were layered over chunky knits.
Raquel Allegra showed her trademark deconstructed spider-web knits in a variety of silhouettes. Mixed in with slinky leather skirts, leggings and dresses and styled with head wraps and Zoro hats, Allegra’s delicate creations took on a rugged sensibility. —Erin Barajas
