Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '09: David Alexander
In David Alexander’s Winter ’09 collection, titled “The Broken Princess and the Secret Prince,” the designer described a story about a princess leading a “lavish life of fun” and then becoming a “woman in control” after the death of her father. The presentation on March 14 was part of BOXeight Fashion Week at the Los Angeles Theatre.
On the bookends of the show run, Alexander showed ostentation and extravagance with a short, skimpy ivory jeweled dress and flashy champagne-gold jumpsuit, both worn with chubby fox-fur shawls. In between, Alexander’s palette hovered in dark hues, but he kept the dial up on the sparkle with a beaded fringe miniskirt, gold and silver leather panels on a high-waist skirt, a women’s suit in metallic-thread fabric, and a purple ballgown skirt topped with a bustier saturated in purple gems.
The men’s clothing was less attention-hungry, referring to a character, the “Secret Prince,” who “hides in the shadows.” Looks ranged from a four-pocket leather coat and casual ombreacute; zip-up sweater to a fitted black blazer and plaid trousers worn with a bow tie. —Rhea Cortado
