Sadly, No Rock Star Sighting

Legendary Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister was not presiding over his favorite hangout, West Hollywood’s Rainbow Bar Grill, on June 1. He was reportedly traveling in Germany.

But the next best thing to a Lemmy sighting probably was a party for the Motorhead Collection By Hurley, a limited-edition collection from the Costa Mesa, Calif.–based surf and skatewear house. Hurley took band graphics beloved by legions of Motorhead fans—such as the Snaggletooth logo—and put them on faded T-shirts with the bent H-shaped Hurley logo stealthily placed on the shirts.

Hurley has designed limited collections for various cult rockers in the past. In fall 2008, it was some of the Winston Smith graphics used on albums for punk band Dead Kennedys. Next up might be Hurley shirts designed by rock band Alkaline Trio, said Greg Teal, the surf house’s music and entertainment marketing manager.

There have been other attempts to put the Motorhead logo on other activewear, most prominently, the Motorhead shirts donned by roller-derby team The Lincolnshire Bombers in England. Motorhead manager Todd Singerman said so far he has been pleased with Hurley. “Our [concert] T-shirts aren’t this good,” he said.
