Keva by Keva J: Statement Swim
Using traditional swimwear fabrics, New York–based designer Keva Johnson creates completely untraditional swimwear for her label, Keva by Keva J. She said she is “different” and that she failed to find swimwear with the ability to make a statement. “It all looked the same. I wanted to stand out,” she said.
In 2006, Johnson started making one-off pieces of swimwear. This year saw her first true collection targeted at retail. With a Rastafarian theme, a nod to her Jamaican heritage, Keva by Keva J’s hard-launch collection is packed with unlikely shapes, daring cutouts, dramatic colors and prints, and complicated silhouettes. Her Spring and Fall 2010 collections continue Johnson’s unique take on swimwear.
“My designs are for confident women who are outside the norm and want to make a bold statement,” Johnson said. “There are lots of cutaways and features that are meant to accentuate a woman’s body—nice legs, a nice back, the shoulders.”
Keva by Keva J suits run in standard sizing and wholesale for $75 to $90. Johnson hopes to sell her collections to upscale department stores and specialty boutiques.
