In the Name of Craft: Renegade Craft Fair Comes to the CMC
The crafty and the creative convened upon the California Market Center for the Renegade Craft Fair on July 11 and 12.
D.I.Y. devotees shopped the many booths set up on the CMC's 13th-floor Penthouse space, where the wares ranged from handmade jewelry by Los Angeles–based Chocolate and Steel to wearable felt beards by I Made You a Beard, based in Portland, Ore., to graphic T-shirts screenprinted by Brooklyn N.Y.–based Supermaggie.
This was the first Los Angeles event for Renegade Craft, which began in Chicago six years ago and has held fairs in San Franciso and New York.
On Saturday, July 11, the fair held a clothing swap as well as demo stations showing fledgling D.I.Y.-ers how to create their own plush dolls, buttons and badges.
In addition to a digital photobooth and a "postcard machine"—which was in actuality a human being dispensing postcards from inside a makeshift canvas vending machine (but still making robotic sounds), a dining area provided some rest from all the crafting with snacks and dishes from Tiara Cafe.
