Designers and buyers will find abundant opportunities to browse international resources at five major textile events and a premium-denim show in New York in the coming weeks.Prefab: The Supima Premium Fabric Show offers two days of fabric sourcing and seminars at New York’s Gotham Hall Jan. 13–14. Displays showcase outstanding menswear and womenswear Supima fabrics from more than 50 mills in China, Colombia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Peru, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and the United States. The show will culminate with Supima’s Contest for Emerging Designers. Twenty-one finalists, chosen from dozens of contestant entries from around the world, were given 10 yards of Supima cotton fabric contributed by Supima’s international partner mills to execute two eveningwear looks. Winners will be chosen in a live runway competition Wednesday evening, Jan. 14, at Gotham Hall in front of an audience of buyers, editors, and stylists. The contest was developed to give exposure to emerging talent while functioning as a design laboratory for Supima’s partner mills and licensees.Kingpins is a jeans-oriented trade show running Jan. 13–14 at the Westside Loft. Both exhibitors and attendees are carefully vetted for this exclusive show created by New York–based garment and fabric agent Olah Inc. All guests are by invitation-only. Exhibitors—all leaders in the industry—represent the total supply chain of denim fabrics, cotton fabrics, linings, jean production, labels, T-shirts, and cotton fiber. Approximately 19 domestic and international suppliers include ChariTEES, Cone Denim, Dow XLA, Kurabo Hong Kong, Kurabo Japan Denim, Nexgen, Orta Anadolu, La Petit Poussin (PPM), and Rainbow Textiles.Paris-based Premiegrave;re Vision SA, the world’s leading trade show for textile design, is running two events in New York this month. In September 2008, it acquired the well-established international textile design show Direction. Now called Direction by Indigo, the show will run twice yearly in January and August, rather than thrice yearly as in the past. Returning to the Penn Plaza Pavilion Jan. 13–15, the event will showcase some 150 international exhibitors of trendsetting collections and fashion forecasters and attract more than 2,600 fashion professionals, decision-making executives, and product development teams. Original textile designs and lifestyle concepts cover all markets from apparel and home to paper and novelty. The acquisition of Direction provides a nice synergy with the 18th edition of Premiegrave;re Vision SA’s Premiegrave;re Vision Preview New York, the premier textile workshop and show, which runs Jan. 14–15 at the Altman Building and the Metropolitan Pavilion. The business-friendly environment showcases 112 exhibitors from around the world, including Brazil, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, the UK, and the United States grouped into four “style universes” with the evocative titles of “Seduction,” “Relax,” “Distinction,” and “Pulsation.” Show features include a trend presentation, an exclusive Spring/Summer ’10 color card, a color trend wall, and a fabric forum. At the Hotel Pennsylvania, textile and surface design studios from ten countries, including England, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, and the United States, showcase hundreds of collections at Printsource New York. From Jan. 13–15, America’s major manufacturers, retailers, and catalogs in the designer, bridge, and moderate categories will shop the show as well as private label developers and converters. Resources cover such industries as men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel, bed and bath, kitchen and tabletop, paper goods and stationery, wall coverings, window fashions, and other surface and textile design applications.The largest of the textile trade events, Texworld USA takes over the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center Feb. 3–5 to provide designers and buyers access to a wide array of globally made and highly innovative, high-quality, and creative fabrics to showcase the latest trends. Produced by the German trade-show giant Messe Frankfurt and sponsored by Austrian fiber producer Lenzing, Texworld’s product range covers the entire fabric spectrum. Thirteen countries are represented with the majority of exhibitors coming from Asia. In spite of the economy, the producer reports that attendee registration is up compared to last winter’s show. This edition of Texworld introduces the Eco-Textile Labeling Guide to help manufacturers, retailers, and brands navigate eco-textile certification, find out which eco standards are most suitable for them, and learn how to source products that have a minimal negative environmental impact.
