CAPS to Counterfeiters
The Coalition to Advance the Protection of Sports Logos (CAPS) is taking aim at counterfeit sports merchandise. The group is urging hockey fans to beware of counterfeit goods for sale at the New Year’s Day hockey game between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park in Boston. The National Hockey League is working with Boston law enforcement to block the sale of counterfeit goods during the game. CAPS is offering tips to help consumers distinguish “official” NHL merchandise. For example, “look for the NHL hologram sticker or hangtag” and “beware of ripped tags, typographical errors, poor-quality screen-printing or irregular markings on apparel.” CAPS was founded in 1992 as an alliance between The Collegiate Licensing Co., Major League Baseball Properties Inc., NBA Properties Inc., NFL Properties LLC and NHL Enterprises L.P.
