AAFA Releases Updated Restricted-Substances List

The American Apparel & Footwear Association has published its fifth edition of the “AAFA Restricted-Substances List” for the apparel, footwear and home textile markets.

“For the U.S. apparel and footwear industry to remain globally competitive, especially in a down market, our supply chain must be as efficient as possible,” said Kevin Burke, the AAFA’s president and chief executive, in a statement. “Of all the helpful tools in the AAFA arsenal, this list has quickly emerged as an industry must-have because AAFA’s RSL helps the industry comply with today’s regulations while equipping the industry with the information they need to meet the challenges of tomorrow.”

The RSL includes updated information on new lead limits as dictated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. First released in the summer of 2007, the list covers chemicals and other substances whose presence in a product is restricted through a government regulation or law. The list identifies the most restrictive iteration of that regulation worldwide and is reviewed and updated every six months. The latest version is made available for free on the AAFA Web site, www.apparelandfootwear.org.—Erin Barajas
