New Resources Guide: Society of the Spectacle
Society of the Spectacle’s artistic T-shirt graphics carry a subtle suggestion of sociopolitical meaning.
“It’s about design first, art first and integrating the message as best we can,” said designer Namanh Hoang. '
One shirt bears an illustrated octopus and a reference to the “media tentacle,” a term describing how a small number of large corporations control multiple news outlets. Other shirts comment on race by rendering celebrity faces, such as that of Kate Moss, as blank paint-by-number drawings. “Casualties of Peace” shows a peace dove carrying a gun to raise questions about why war is used as a method to deliver peace.
The Spring 2009 line evolved to include a small offering of casual cut-and-sew items in high-quality fabrics, such as a cotton twill miniskirt featuring silk lining, a sheer cotton-jersey cowl-neck shirt with short, cuffed sleeves, and a men’s dress shirt with festive madras-plaid trim.
Society of the Spectacle has been sold to Atrium in New York, American Rag in Los Angeles, Nordstrom stores in California and Tomorrowland Edition in Tokyo. —Rhea Cortado
