New York Fashion Week Spring '09: Project Runway
NEW YORK—The “Project Runway” grand finale at New York Fashion Week is supposed to showcase the final three designers from the season. But with several episodes left to air, show producers Bravo TV had to present collections from all the remaining six designers to keep the viewing audience in suspense.
(The series’ finale will not air until October.)
Los Angeles–based Jerell Scott kicked off the Sept. 12 show with cocktail dresses, jackets and iridescent silk gowns in a purple, gold and black palette.
Joe Faris turned out a collection of Americana-inspired looks. A navy and white star-print dress was the most fashionable, and there were plenty of prairie dresses and biker-inspired leather bustiers and skin-tight jeans. Stephen “Suede” Baum’s collection felt more Vegas than New York—there were plaid dresses with ball-gown skirts, bustier and pant ensembles, and a holographic silver dress with iridescent pink and blue fringe.
Korto Momolu’s silhouettes were elaborate with elongated shapes, dramatic ruffles and asymmetric necklines. Kenley Collins created a vintage-inspired collection filled with 1950s-meets-’80s colorful floral prints, billowing silhouettes, exaggerated shoulders and a bold color palette. The final designer, Leanne Marshall, took an architectural approach, layering structured ruffles on skirts and dresses. A short ensemble had an elaborate collar, and a pretty aqua and white mini-dress was layered with flirty ruffles. —N. Jayne Seward
