Tyler Rose Swimwear: Jetting Back to '80s Glitz
Tyler Rose Swimwear designer Nichole Carroll grew up along the California coast and worked in the surfwear industry for brands such as Toes on the Nose before launching her first swimwear line two years ago in Orange County, Calif.
For her own line, Carroll steered clear of the traditional surfer-girl styles in favor of more poolside chic. “I just love being different and creating my own trends,” Carroll said. “The Tyler Rose girl is a jetsetter. She loves sitting poolside. She’s magnetic, bold, confident and loves creating her own style.”
Carroll has always been somewhat of a maverick. She originally set out to become a sports broadcaster instead of a designer.
Carroll’s collections tend to tell a story.
The Spring ’09 collection is a throwback to the flashy ’80s, when “Miami Vice” ruled the ratings. “It was about glitz and glamour, intrigue, thrill, amazing architecture, bright lights, and flashiness,” he said.
Neons, metallics and textured fabrics in prints and solids make up the base of the collection. The cuts feature mostly triangles, twist tops and bandeau. The bottoms are low-rise yet have adequate coverage.
“We are all about a perfect fit for the rear,” Carroll said.
Wholesale prices are $74 to $79 for bikinis, $83 to $91 for one-pieces, $65 to $72 for coverups and $33 to $36 for children’s suits. First deliveries are set for February.
With all the different pieces involved, Carroll likes to educate her customers on how to build their swimwear wardrobes.
“I teach women how to wear a suit and what fits their body type,” she said. “Helping women to be confident in their own skin is a great feeling. The best part is coming up with a story and being able to relate to it. I also always include my closest girlfriends in on my design process.”
