L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: Joyrich

The cheerful, colorful designs of Los Angeles–based Joyrich closed the slate of shows on Oct. 18 at BoxEight in Los Angeles. The brand, which is sold out of a multi-label store by the same name on Los Angeles’ Melrose Avenue, is helmed by designer Tom Hirota.

“I want to make color fun,” Hirota said.

This is the second season for the Joyrich collection, and the looks on the runway were indeed joyful. Color-blocked track jackets were paired with engineered denim, fleece bottoms reworked in jeans styles and leggings that came in Day-Glo shades and bright geometric patterns.

Hirota showed slim-cut leather jackets in ’80s shades of mustard and teal. Some of the leather jackets included double collars, and a track jacket featured a double row of zippers. A stars-and-stripes print in red, white and blue turned up on tees, and skinny men’s shorts and jackets came in metallic fabrications. Some were finished with 2x2 rib in contrasting colors.

Jeans were shown in traditional blues and blacks, as well as saturated colors; most were shown in clean finishes, but Hirota included one style with an acid-wash finish. —Alison A. Nieder
