L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: Voom by Joy Han
With this being an election year, Joy Han took advantage of the political scenario, as well as the California Market Center’s newly renovated patio, to stage her Voom by Joy Han Spring ’09 presentation, held Oct. 18 in Los Angeles.
Han’s retro looks harked back to the conservative ’50s and then evolved into the more liberal ’60s. She interpreted the earlier decade with sexy secretary looks featuring sharp lines, heavy bodice treatments and tailored silhouettes. Examples included silk collared dresses with big buttons, tube tops paired with pencil skirts, puff-sleeve dresses and tailored jackets.
For her ’60s look, Han returned to her playful, flouncy tops and dresses featuring colorful prints of butterflies and Native American graphics. She reached an in-between look with denim dresses adorned with big dove appliqueacute;s along the midsection. The audience, which included former Olympic skater Oksana Baiul, seemed to appreciate Han’s effort, giving the Los Angeles–based designer a standing ovation. —Robert McAllister
