L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: Lana Fuchs Couture

Lana Fuchs was one of several designers from the desert making their debuts at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Culver City, Calif. Fuchs’ Oct. 14 show at Smashbox Studios, titled “Rhapsody in Bloom,” featured influences well beyond her home base in Las Vegas. The Russian-born designer showed about 50 looks with a heavy dose of silky day-to-evening dresses featuring rich colors and luscious Spring prints. It was a bit of Giverny meets Jodhpur gleaned from recent trips to France and India. “The colors you see there are amazing and unforgettable,” she reflected.

She led off her fashion show with a rich aqua-blue baby-doll dress featuring hand-painted orchids and extended the print onto a silk maxi dress in tangerine. Fuchs showed that rich colorations aren’t the only formula that works for Spring, revealing a series of silk chiffon spaghetti-strap and halter feather dresses in graduated gray tones. Then she combined colors on a series of empire-waist dresses, mixing fruity shades such green and orange. She capped the presentation with a flower-petal bridal gown worn by Sudanese model Atong.
