L.A. Fashion Week Spring '09: Dye 4 Gething
The Grecian inspiration was clear in the debut collection of Dye 4 Gething on Oct. 14., as nearly every dress incorporated fluid draping reminiscent of the graceful folds immortalized on Greek statues.
“It’s our modern take on Grecian,” said stylist Michael Dye, one half of the collaborative effort of Dye 4 Gething. The other half of the duo, British designer Debbie Gething, added, “We both like a bit of the glamorous hellip; but it’s very understated.”
The intimate pool area at the famed Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood, encased by tall foliage and lit by pool lights, provided a tranquil setting that complemented the dreamy air of the collection. Models strolled around the perimeter of the pool in dresses that captured an “ethereal, feminine and pretty” mood. Colors progressed from transparent watercolors to matte nudes to vibrant royal-purple silk charmeuse. Standouts were the angelic evening gowns composed of overlapping sheer aqua and lilac chiffon with long drapes that trailed the models like rippling water. Some of the short dresses were more restrained in draping, such as a champagne-gold fitted dress with a transparent curtain that hung from the center or a simple asymmetrical dress with one long fluttering sleeve. Contrasting with the weightlessness of the chiffon and glossy silk was a motif of chunky braids and ornate knotted-rope designs that adorned necklines and waists like bold jewelry. The Greek theme was also interpreted into liquid-gold bikinis and leggings, which added flashy excitement, but the gilded fabric looked best in moderation. —Rhea Cortado
