Method to the 'Mad Men'
A parade of Tinseltown’s stylish ladies—Emmy Rossum, Molly Sims, Sophia Bush, Kristen Bell, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Eve and Rose McGowan—turned out in their cutest short party frocks for the Hollywood Style Awards, presented by Hollywood Life magazine and Nikon. The event feted award winners such as Bob Mackie, Monique Lhuillier, Manny Mashouf of Bebe and celeb stylist Nicole Chavez.
In true do-it-yourself designer form, Katherine Jane Bryant, who won the “TV’s Most Stylish Show” award for her work as costume designer for AMC’s “Mad Men,” wore a dress of her own concoction. “It’s a 1980s dress that I’m obsessed with. It was long and it had this crazy long train, so I just cut it off and redid the train,” Bryant said. On the rear was a bustle that looked like a pair of oversized rosettes.
The re-designed vintage approach is one way that Bryant creates costumes for the characters on “Mad Men.” Their closets are a mixed bag of original designs, costume rentals and vintage gems that she scavenges everywhere from vintage dealers to the Rose Bowl Flea Market.
“For Joan Holloway, I designed almost everything for her. I love [her] blue suit with the printed silk blouse. It’s beautiful. There’s a suit that I have for Trudy Campbell that she wore in season one that I found was a Bill Blass. It was an amazing vintage piece. I recut it, I redesigned it and it was fantastic. I’ll find designer pieces, but also, I think that’s the great thing about the show—that it’s very everyday. It’s not about being like a couture fashion show. It’s about these people’s lives, and it just happens to be set in the early 1960s.”
