Mary Green Earth
REPURPOSED: No scrap of fabric is wasted under Mary Green’s watch. The designer’s new Mary Green Earth collection is made from a patchwork of fabric remnants and excess elastic that might have otherwise been dumped.
“As silk was very valuable, the [Chinese] factories kept all extra pieces, hoping to use or sell them eventually,” Green said. “It didn’t quite work out that way, and many ended up with bales of silk pieces. My idea was to take these smaller pieces and make something wonderful.” Green purchased the fabric scraps, which ranged from 3 to 15 meters, from the factories she worked with in China. She used this yardage, along with leftover fabric and elastic from production of her lingerie line, to create Mary Green Earth thongs. Each panty is made from a minimum of four different prints or colors and are hand cut. Mary Green Earth has been shipping to stores such as Purrfect Girl in Aptos, Calif., and Rascal’s Ladies in San Clemente, Calif., since September.
KEY LOOKS: There is currently only one thong style, with each panty possessing a unique combination of prints and colors. Green plans on expanding upon the concept with eye mask, camisole and chemise styles in the near future. —Rhea Cortado
