Repositioning at DHL
German shipping company Deutsche Post AG announced plans to close its DHL Express service centers, eliminate its domestic-only air and ground services in the United States, and focus its efforts on its international business. DHL U.S. Express will close its U.S. ground hubs and cut the number of stations from 412 to 103. As a result, the company will eliminate about 9,500 U.S. jobs at DHL Express. (The company has already eliminated approximately 5,400 positions since January.) About 3,000 to 4,000 U.S. Express jobs will be retained to service DHL’s international express customers. The repositioning is expected to reduce DHL Express’ operating costs from $5.4 billion to under $1 billion, according to the company.
