L.A. Fashion Week Fall '08: Whitley Kros
The main tent at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif., was sprinkled with stars at the March 9 fashion show for Whitley Kros. Kirstie Alley, Jenna Elfman, Jason Lee and Juliette Lewis as well as hordes of fashionistas were among the guests.
Whitley Kros, a relatively new line started by actress Marissa Ribisi (twin sister to actor Giovanni) and Sophia Coloma, former co-owner of the Satine Boutique in Los Angeles, made its second appearance at the event. The sound mix for the show was provided by well-known musician Beck, who is married to Ribisi.
Whitley Kros is a fictional character created by the two designers, who seetheir alter ego as an urbane traveler who flits around the world in between her busy schedule of business meetings and cultural events. This season, Whitley Kros traveled to Berlin for a rock concert and then headed off to Paris for a business rendezvous.
The Fall/Winter 2008 collection was packed with the line’s traditional casualwear, work wear and out-on-the-town attire.
Whitley’s suitcase was filled with sleek and simple dresses made of bright geometric prints bursting with earthy colors, casual herringbone twill pants that were slouchy yet sophisticated, and frocks made of gray and blue plaid or black-and-white checks.
Back in the collection this season was the vine jean, including a white skinny jean splashed with artistic prints, including a zebra across the front of one.
“It’s a little bit of sophistication, rock ’n’ roll and poetry,” Coloma said. “It has an international feel, but it is wearable. —Deborah Belgum
