U.S. Cotton Subsidies Still Disputed
The United States lost its final appeal in a trade dispute with Brazil over cotton subsidies. A World Trade Organization appeals panel in Geneva, Switzerland, reversed parts of a ruling made late last year. It found, for the most part, that U.S. cotton subsidies breached global commerce agreements. Brazil can now ask the WTO for retaliatory trade sanctions on the United States until cotton subsidies end. Brazil maintains that U.S. subsidies distort the global cotton market.
