Though Mavi Jeans just opened up a new showroom in the Gerry Building, West Coast salesman Scott Viscomi said he’s not a typical showroom rep. “I’m an on-the-road guy,” said Viscomi, who previously worked with action sports– and surf-market brands such as Aaron Chang swimwear and Cult Industries. “We love nothing more than to be with our customers. When we’re not here, we’ll be on the road. hellip; I try to be in those stores regularly, understanding the needs of customers.”
Mavi is known for being sold at major retailers such as Nordstrom. The company, founded in 1991 in Istanbul, Turkey, has its North American headquarters in Vancouver, Canada. It is sold in more than 4,000 doors, including specialty boutiques, better department stores and specialty chains worldwide.
Viscomi’s personal door-to-door sales style was a perfect fit for Mavi’s new strategy of reconnecting with its specialty stores, including Villains in San Francisco and Raw Clothing in San Diego.
“[We’re] really focusing everything from the top down on the specialty-store customer: the way we’re relating and shipping orders, the way we’re producing, the amount of goods we’re producing, the type of goods we’re producing, right down to the inseams,” Viscomi said.
The new showroom space highlights Mavi’s men’s and women’s collections of denim and coordinating knit tops, tees and jackets. The denim ranges from “Mediterranean, Southern California, bohemian” style with faded, relaxed washes to dark, unembellished styles in trouser fits. Wholesale price points range from $39 to $54 for men’s and women’s denim.
Mavi Jeans’ vertically integrated production and variety of denim offerings allow for Viscomi to accommodate the special needs of boutiques. The company offers 36-inch inseams for jeans and for nearly five years has offered an eco-friendly, certified, organic cotton denim that is dyed with low-impact dyes.
“It’s more reminding people that we can do that,” Viscomi said. “It’s listening to their needs and looking at what we do and finding synergies.” —Rhea Cortado
