Celerant Launches Item-level RFID
New York–based Celerant Technology Corp. has released a point-of-sale–based RFID (radio-frequency identification) system aimed at speeding up sales transactions and improving inventory tracking.
The system uses RFID’s wireless technology by placing an antenna under each workstation. As a result, the terminals can read RFID tags and communicate with Celerant’s Command Retail server to track merchandise.
“There has not been much RFID to speak of at the POS or retail store back-office level,” explained Ian Goldman, president and chief executive officer. “For RFID to work in real life, it must be incorporated into the entire product lifecycle. Once that is done, retailers can enjoy a POS transaction as simple as a customer dropping 10 garments on a counter or a store-to-store transfer essentially as simple with an inventory clerk.”
Aside from helping to manage inventory, the system can also help in theft control and reduce receiving times as the system can read products automatically during the transfer point. Merchandise labels can be printed and received at the same time.
