Port Truckers
The Port of Long Beach put the final touches on its Clean Air Trucks Program, which goes into effect in October. On Feb. 19, the port’s Board of Harbor Commissioners voted to allow thousands of independent truck owners operating clean trucks to pick up containers at the port instead of mandating that trucks be owned by trucking companies. The board also postponed collecting the $35 per 20-foot container clean-truck fee, moving it from June 1 to Oct. 1, when a $15 per 20-foot container infrastructure fee goes into effect. The port is working in conjunction with the Port of Los Angeles on a $1.6 billion Clean Air Truck program that will eliminate polluting trucks from the harbor area. By 2012, all trucks must meet 2007 federal emissions standards. The Port of Los Angeles wants only trucking companies, not independent truckers, to operate port trucks.
