Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim/Cruise 2009: Red Carter
Red Carter, this season’s “Mercedes-Benz Presents” designer, debuted the collection during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim on July 19 to a packed tent at The Raleigh hotel in Miami Beach, Fla. Carter gave a nod to both the Roaring ’20s and “Barbarella” with his “Flapperella”-themed collection. “I just wanted to bring some fun and glamour. That’s my goal,” Carter said, dressed in a full tux for the occasion. Known for his whimsical approach to design, Carter’s collection included a variety of patterns in bright colors inspired by the art deco era—with a glamorous twist. Styles ranged from sporty 1920s-inspired rompers to bright floral-printed bikinis and glamorous beaded numbers from his new Red Carter Glam line. According to Carter, the elaborate suits could be worn to a nightclub as well as to the pool. “Living in Miami, there’s 1,001 places to wear that swimsuit,” Carter said. “At the end of the day, I’m not an ’in-the-sand’ kind of guy. I’m a ’by-the-pool’ kind of guy. I believe in luxury.” The designer also added more sportswear to the collection this season, including a wider selection of tops, dresses and tunics. —N.J.S.
