Directives West: L.A. Blueprint
Whether it was woven plaid trouser pants or a chunky cowl-neck knit sweater, the key items shown in Directives West’s “L.A. Blueprint” trend forecast for Fall ’08 had a comfortably relaxed and sophisticated air. The retail consultants highlighted three trends for the better and moderate market on April 7 in the California Market Center.
In “The Big Stitch,” long knit cardigans and billowy, short-sleeve sweaters in textured knit, space dye, geometric patterns and color blocking were key. A jersey knit dress worn under a knit cardigan and a matching jacket–and–capri pants set showcased how to wear knits from head to toe. Dressy short-sleeve knit jackets and cocoon-shaped sweaters were layered over long-sleeve turtlenecks and looked best with dark, clean jeans. In a palette of dusty rose, mossy green and burnt orange, nubbly yarns and cable knits worn with light-wash jeans or khaki pants had an earthy autumn look.
Casual weekendwear in “Easy Does It” ranged from ultra-casual hooded sweat-suit sets to urban casual outfits such as dark jeans worn with leather motorcycle jackets or quilted vests. Hooded track suits had an edgy yoga feel with minimal embroidered embellishment, faded washes and raw-edge details.
In the final trend group, “No Place Like Homme,” elements of menswear dressing such as ruffled tuxedo bibs; vests; and pin-striped, plaid and herringbone prints were interpreted with a feminine twist. Trapeze jackets with three-quarter-length sleeves or trumpet sleeves were a key item, shown in wool, patent and printed fabrics.
