L.A. Fashion Week Spring '08: Single

“Forget the runway” seemed to be the motto behind the Oct. 18 debut of Single’s Spring/Summer 2008 collection, held at the 944 Lounge, the in-office nightclub for the fashion and nightlife journal on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, Calif.

Instead of the traditional runway show for Single, models stepped up to white podiums to show off looks from the label’s next season. Photographers noisily shot pictures of the models, lending the event a bit of red-carpet drama. This sense of theater was exactly the point of skipping the runway show, said Single designer Galina Sobolev.

The look of the 24 pieces modeled was supposed to evoke the jet set, Studio 54–inspired style of the late 1970s. Using materials such as silk chiffon, silk charmeuse and sequins, the collection’s dresses aspired toward a silhouette that was body-hugging yet offered an ease of movement.

A nightclub sensibility may have also inspired the collection’s linen trousers, cut in a menswear fashion and then laminated with a coating to give them a metallic look. Sobolev also exhibited several looks for her tween line, Single Girl. —Andrew Asch
