Purse Stars in 'Sex and the City' Film
Though it won’t hit theaters until May 2008, the cinematic version of “Sex and the City” is creating a lot of stir for Beverly Hills–based handbag designer Timmy Woods of Timmy Woods, Beverly Hills Collection.
On-location publicity shots from the movie featuring lead actress Sarah Jessica Parker carrying one of Woods’ “Eiffel Tower” bags embellished with more than 6,000 Swarovski crystals have been appearing in a number of media outlets, including Access Hollywood and InStyle, and have been generating interest.
The “Eiffel Tower” bag wholesales for $1,200. There’s a version without the stones for $175 wholesale. The bag is actually handmade from acacia wood, as are many bags in the line. Some take up to a month to complete. The “Eiffel Tower” bag fits right into the plot line of the movie as it leads off with Carrie Bradshaw (Parker) returning from a romantic trip from Paris. It will roll out for initial deliveries in January.
Other bags from Woods’ line, including her famous “kissing lips,” telephone and horse-head bags, have appeared in the television version of “Sex and the City,” which ran on HBO. New York retailer and stylist Patricia Fields was the stylist for the TV show and was the costume designer for the movie, as well.
“I do sophisticated and beautiful bags as well as things like the ’Eiffel Tower,’” Woods explained. “There’s a psychological side to fashion that has a sense of humor. That’s what these are.”
Sharon Koshet Sales, based in the California Market Center in Los Angeles, is repping the line, which is distributed to better specialty shops. For more information, call (213) 623-6689. —Robert McAllister
