L.A. Fashion Week Spring '08: Ecoganik
If the environment is the road to success, Ecoganik is in the fast lane.
The 4-year-old label has been using organic cotton for some time now. But it wasn’t until the company hired Geneveive Cruz as its head designer a year and a half ago that it found the on-ramp to creativity and fashion.
Ecoganik showed its Spring 2008 collection Oct. 15 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif.
Cruz’s marching orders were to make the line more colorful and less flat when working with the mostly garment-dyed organic cotton knit fabrics that make Ecoganik so environmentally friendly.
The fabric requires a strong silhouette and artfully cut lines to stand out. Cruz was aware of her challenge, adding gathers on pockets, along yokes and shoulders to give dimension and flair to dresses, tops and pants. Many pieces had hoodies that gave them an updated, youthful air. The looks were primarily rendered in soft pastels, beige or white.
“This line is mostly about comfort,” said Cruz, who had her own knit tops line, Exodus, before joining Ecoganik. —Deborah Belgum
