No Wal-Mart in NYC
Bentonville, Ark.–based retail giant Wal-Mart has scrapped its plans to open a Wal-Mart store in New York City in the face of growing opposition, according to a report in The New York Times. There are nearly 4,000 Wal-Mart stores in the United States. The retailer had its eye on sites in Queens and Staten Island for its new stories. In New York, organized labor, in particular, objects to Wal-Mart opening in the city, for fear that its low prices and low wages will take business away from New York’s unionized stories.
