L.A. Fashion Week Fall '07: Yana K.
Last season, designer Yana Khromova showed her Yana K. collection on the runway at Smashbox. This season, she took the show downtown to the California Market Center, where she staged her Fall ’07 collection on March 24.
“I think the [CMC] is a great place to show the collection,” said Khromova. “It opens the door to buyers and really good business networking.”
The looks on the runway ranged from flirty dresses that took inspiration from every decade from the ’40s through the ’80s, including a full-length maxi dress with a sequined cummerbund, a blouson mini in petal-pink satin and an off-the-shoulder baby-doll dress in gold.
A green sequined A-line dress had the look of tiled mosaics, while a cadet-blue coat-dress had a pale pink pleated underskirt.
There were lofty sweater dresses in winter white, as well as a black cardigan sweater with oversize wood buttons. A copper wrap dress had an oversized asymmetrical collar that extended out to one side.
Khromova said she was inspired by the colors found in peacock feathers and showed her skill at mixing textures by dressing her models in brightly colored and patterned leggings and slouchy knit caps.
“I wanted to take it back to the basics to show the classic looks but funk it up with the leggings and the hats,” she said. —Alison A. Nieder
