L.A. Fashion Week Fall '07: Samora
Samora Olayan once again journeyed back into time to gather inspiration for her Fall collection, which she previewed March 21 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif. This time, the Los Angeles–based designer looked to the 1940s and ’50s, when the line between masculine and feminine was thinning as a more empowered woman took on more masculine, tailored silhouettes in her wardrobe.
Olayan’s interpretation of that period materialized with a clean, classic and tailored look while retaining the feminine mystique.
Examples included pleated blouses paired with high-waisted skinny trousers and plaid and tweed jackets over pencil and tulip skirts. She glammed up jackets with shawl collars and dresses with shirred necklines to offset the more defined edges and lines.
Samora maintained a devotion to rich fabrics this time, featuring checkered wools and mohair. In addition to black and brown, she focused on earthy and spicy colors such as moss green, bright mustard, and various reds and blues.—Robert McAllister
