L.A. Fashion Week Fall '07: Tatyana Yekymova
Ukrainian designer Tatyana Yekymova made her stateside fashion show debut on March 16 as part of Kitten Fashion Week at The Standard Downtown. With a collection that was equal parts warrior princess and Vegas showgirl, Yekymova’s heavily beaded, jeweled and embroidered designs were an exotic addition to Fashion Week.
Bugle-beaded boy shorts, hand-embroidered bras and a mod A-line mini were accessorized with matching purses, sun visors and shin guards. While many pieces defied convention—including a beaded bikini with leather insets—the designer’s handwork and exuberance carried through the collection.
Through a translator, Yekymova told the California Apparel News her inspirations ranged from music and art to history and the Renaissance. “I want to make everything old feel fresh again,” the designer said. —Erin Barajas
