L.A. Fashion Week Fall '07: Sue Wong
Sue Wong knows how to set the mood, and at her March 18 runway show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios, the Los Angeles dress designer introduced her Fall ’07 collection with a trio of mod dancers in silver sequined hot pants and a soundtrack of classic 1960s pop favorites.
Sixties-era England was the theme of Wong’s collection, and the designer opened her show with a group of short and flirty dresses spangled with paillettes in candy-colored brights, metallics and black.
“I had first-hand experience with the whole British invasion. I lived through it,” said Wong, who started her design career at age 19.
The collection was a mix of classic Sue Wong—think lush embroideries and beading on bold graphic prints—and the designer’s nod to mod with mini, maxi, blouson and bubble silhouettes.
Wong had Marianne Faithful and Anita Pallenberg in mind for her “Chelsea Girls” group of maxi-length dresses mixed with bohemian touches such as a felt yoke neckline embellished with jet-black stones with luxurious hand-painted silk, while Wong ventured into more overtly edgy styles with a group of ruched dresses titled “Vamps & Vixens.” And her “Victoria” group combined full-skirted silhouettes with Victorian details such as corsetry and modern touches such as the ball gown with the deconstructed organza skirt that fluttered around the model as she walked. —Alison A.
