Singer and starlet Jessica Simpson caused quite the commotion at the July 14 debut of her new namesake juniors swim line at The Raleigh hotel for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami Swim in Miami Beach. Prior to the runway show, rumors swirled that Simpson might take to the catwalk herself to model the line, which heavily referenced her breakout role of all-American sweetheart Daisy Duke. A crowd of fans mobbed the show, cameras ready, but Simpson’s only runway appearance came at the end, when she took a bow. Looks on the runway focused on traditional bikinis and one-pieces in classic prints, including cherries, gingham, paisley, flowers, stripes and polka dots. A leopard-print maillot with lingerie-inspired details and a maillot with a ruched bodice and vintage details offered a more directional look. Coverups ranged from long cotton dresses to sleeveless chiffon robes. The line, which is targeted at department stores and specialty retailers, hopes Simpson’s cachet will draw teens and co-eds looking for a little Hollywood glamour. —Erin Barajas
