Wal-Mart Labor
Bentonville, Ark.–based Wal-Mart Stores has been charged with labor abuses by the Washington, D.C., watchdog agency Worker Rights Consortium. The group charged one of the retailer’s suppliers in the Philippines with being in collusion with government agents in violence against workers and other serious sweatshop abuses. The supplier, Chong Won Inc., a clothing factory located near Manila, was accused of failure to pay minimum wage, forced overtime and blocking worker efforts in forming a union, sometimes using violence. WRC is an independent laborrights organization comprising more than 150 colleges and universities. It issued the accusations from an investigation it conducted in October and November.
