There is something so wholesome about Swedish brand Odd Molly’s “I’m OK, you’re OK” attitude that makes it a perfect match for California’s laid-back and groovy aesthetic. The 5-year-old Stockholm, Sweden–based brand, which made waves when it debuted stateside at the MAGIC Marketplace in 2005, opened its first U.S. showroom in the Cooper Design Space for the August Los Angeles Fashion Market.
Founded by former skateboard and pinball champion Per Holknekt and designer Karin Jimfelt-Ghatan, Odd Molly is all about being unique, fashionable and nice. “We just want everyone to have fun and play nice,” laughed Staci Gabrielli, Odd Molly’s showroom “superdoer”—a title Holknekt coined to describe Gabrielli’s “jack-of-all-trades” duties at the new showroom. This guileless approach to fashion shines through in Odd Molly’s playful prints and crafty touches, including embroidery, ruffles, lace and ribbon.
The permanent 2,000-square-foot space just off the Cooper building’s lobby will be Odd Molly’s American home base for its quirky, modern retro sweaters, ponchos, jackets, blouses, dresses, undergarments and knit accessories, which are already in more than 200 stores in the United States and Canada. A minimalist white interior and the brand’s trademark non-sequitur sayings (including “Use stamps,” “Eat real chocolate” and “You are cool, we are not”) painted on the walls offset Odd Molly’s colorful collection. The same sayings are also stitched into every garment.
Odd Molly pieces wholesale from $75 to $300. For Fall 2007, Odd Molly added leather pieces, including a pleated skirt and shrunken biker jacket, to its knits-driven line. Trousers and denim also debuted for Fall. —Erin Barajas
