The United States Department of Commerce recently began to monitor goods imported to the U.S. from Vietnam to watch for anti-dumping activities, and two major trade associations are not happy about it. The National Retail Federation issued a statement saying the action has already begun to have “a chilling effect on apparel sourcing for Vietnam.” The American Apparel & Footwear Association argues that the Department of Commerce should hold off on implementing anti-dumping tariffs until it is determined that there is dumping occurring on the U.S. market and, if so, that it is hurting U.S. domestic production. In addition, the AAFA said that the investigation into dumping allegations should be initiated by U.S. manufacturers of the same product and what is being dumped on the U.S. market. According to the NRF, U.S. retailers have already begun cancelling orders for goods made in Vietnam.
