L.A. Fashion Week Spring '07: Voom
The Voom fashion show held Oct. 19 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif., was among the more eye-opening presentations during Fashion Week. Designer Joy Han let loose with a barrage of stark, eye-popping colors and prints with a backdrop of sparkling fabrics like Lurex and silk.
The Los Angeles–based designer, who relaunched her line only last summer, took a gamble and used a lot of “bedtime” prints that might be more appropriate on children’s pajamas, but they seemed to work most of the time. One was a Raggedy Ann–print tube dress.
Her matador prints also worked well. Han uses a lot of vintage inspiration, and her Spring collection teetered from mod-like creations as seen on a blue-and-white Lurex puff-sleeve dress to more period pieces such as her flapper dresses with elastic shirring. Han transitioned from her bedtime themes to more sophisticated silk oriental-print smock dresses. —Robert McAllister
