L.A. Fashion Week Spring '07: Sheri Bodell
Los Angeles designer Sheri Bodell has always had a decidedly edgy feel to her creations. This season was no different at her runway show on Oct. 18 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif.
Bodell’s inspiration for her Spring 2007 collection came from a dead forest brought back to life. She set the scene by installing tree trunks along the runway with fake crows perched in the branches. The models’ makeup added to the feel of the death-turned-to-life theme. Their eyes were so heavily accented in black that they looked like orphaned owls. “I’m trying to show the softer side of darkness,” said the Salt Lake City native, who got hooked on fashion by working in retail stores as a teenager. “It’s very moody.”
Bodell’s creations were all over the map. There were some sweet white cotton voile peasant dresses heavily detailed with lace insets, but for the most part her collection embodied the rock ’n’ roll feel that Bodell is known for.
That was seen in the burnt metal beaded accents that graced her halter dresses and mini dresses, which came in dark tones. Most of the line was done in taupes, beiges and muddy browns with snatches of white. Organic fabrics varied from silk to leather to cotton with primitive-inspired details such as wooden beads.
