L.A. Fashion Week Spring '07: Joseph Domingo

Spring and summer should be about good times, according to San Francisco–based designer Joseph Domingo. But that’s no reason to give up sophistication. The designer said there is no reason to suffer for beauty with his Spring 2007 collection, which he called Raindrops in the Bamboo Forest.

Domingo produced a 51-look runway show Oct. 18 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif. Bamboo motifs and polka dots were recurring themes in the collection. He also sought to mix sophistication with ease of movement.

Domingo’s focus on spring sophistication might have been best summed up by his white pleated multi-tiered wedding dress. Instead of having a woman put on the dress with the typical zipper in the back of the garment, sometimes considered a challenge to zip up, Domingo equipped the dress with two zippers on either side of the dress, which he believes makes it easier to handle.

The majority of the garments were constructed out of silk, silk charmeuse and, for a men’s green bomber jacket, bamboo fibers. He said he hoped that this collection would offer men and women something to wear for each hour of the day, including swimwear, casual day wear and clothes for the evening. —Andrew Asch
