L.A. Fashion Week Spring '07: Louis Verdad
Louis Verdad journeyed through the 1980s, channeling the look of Natalie Portman in the 2004 film “Closer” for his Spring 2007 collection. Models donning bobbed wigs and cropped boots had a modern yet retro edge for his runway presentation, held Oct. 15 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif.
The collection was a glimpse into Verdad’s past. “I love the ’80s; I’m from the ’80s,” he said.
The look was a departure for the designer, whose 1940s silhouettes have been a continuous theme throughout his career. While he expanded his range, he presented styles that were a perfect balance of relaxed silhouettes in jersey fabrications and the classic tailored silhouettes favored by his loyal customers. He played with volume with oversize dolman sleeves, kimono shapes, and bubble shorts and dresses. Clean 1960s lines in pieces such as white overalls, skinny pants and short jumpers added a modern edge. The palette, in white and soft gold, had accents of black, red and light blue. —N. Jayne Seward
